Canada widely proclaims itself as a multi-cultural country and follows the mosaic versus melting pot system of multiculturalism. It is a noble goal, with Canadians hoping to claim moral ground against their cousins to the south.

Canada for all its modernity has still got a long way to go to gain its own identity.

It clings on to past glory, such as having a Monarch as the head of state that does not reside in the country, and who has representatives at the country level (governor general) and province level (lieutenant governor) who have come themselves to believe that they are the head of state instead.

How on earth did this system arise, where it is possible for an unelected person to believe themselves to be the head of state, but have their salary paid for by taxpayers?

After hearing about Phil Khan who was beaten up on the day of Obama's inauguration, my initial reaction was anger but I was not altogether surprised. Add Vancouver's non-white police chief Jim Chu to the inauguration of possibly the most powerful man in the world, another non-white person Barack Obama, and likely tension boils to the surface.

There is no arguing that bigotry in myriad forms existed since the beginning of humanity. However the discussion of classification by race may be traced around the time of Carl von Linneaus in 1735.

Upon reading about Black Bird Browser, I was interested to read about the racialization of a web browser. The website is clean and crisp with earthy colors that some might classify as showing African pride.

A few months ago, I was not sure that there were many people that shared my belief in the idea that race is a temporary and subjective construct.

After meeting with Vanessa, I realized that I was not alone. She completed a Masters degree at Concordia University on "A Post-colonial Analysis of the Discursive Making of BiDil and African American Heart Disease."

A few weeks ago, after visiting with some of my favourite friends, I noticed a book that seemed to captivate my eyes. It was lying on a low shelf, maybe even a shoe rack, with Hilary Swank on the cover. It looked like a hip-hop type movie. I wondered, why am I interested in this book, I do not usually like books that Hollywood decides to cover, as it likely will be a light fluff movie.

As my boyfriend knows, I love America's Next Top Model, and of course the fabulous Tyra. There is something about a strong female figure, that delights me greatly.

A local daily had an article about why smart women like to watch brainless tv, as a way to escape, showing a picture of Cycle 11 contestant Sheena Sakai / Satana with a caption asking if you were disappointed that Sheena did not win.
