Submitted by anabelle.foo on Tue, 02/03/2009 - 22:40Canada for all its modernity has still got a long way to go to gain its own identity.
It clings on to past glory, such as having a Monarch as the head of state that does not reside in the country, and who has representatives at the country level (governor general) and province level (lieutenant governor) who have come themselves to believe that they are the head of state instead.
How on earth did this system arise, where it is possible for an unelected person to believe themselves to be the head of state, but have their salary paid for by taxpayers?
Human Rights abuse in Vancouver, off duty cops beat up and allegedly slur a 'brown' guy
Submitted by anabelle.foo on Thu, 01/29/2009 - 00:26After hearing about Phil Khan who was beaten up on the day of Obama's inauguration, my initial reaction was anger but I was not altogether surprised. Add Vancouver's non-white police chief Jim Chu to the inauguration of possibly the most powerful man in the world, another non-white person Barack Obama, and likely tension boils to the surface.
The Origins of Race, Racism and Slavery
Submitted by anabelle.foo on Sun, 01/04/2009 - 19:05There is no arguing that bigotry in myriad forms existed since the beginning of humanity. However the discussion of classification by race may be traced around the time of Carl von Linneaus in 1735.

Irish Slavery and Queen Elizabeth I
Submitted by anabelle.foo on Sun, 01/04/2009 - 17:37Quote:
If Queen Elizabeth I had lived in the 20th Century. she would have been viewed with the same horror as Hitler and Stalin. Her policy of Irish genocide was pursued with such evil zest it boggles the mind of modern men. But Elizabeth was only setting the stage for the even more savage program that was to follow her, directed specifically to exterminate the Irish. James II and Charles I continued Elizabeth’s campaign, but Cromwell almost perfected it. Few people in modern so-called “civilized history” can match the horrors of Cromwell in Ireland. It is amazing what one man can do to his fellow man under the banner that God sanctions his actions!

Black, white, yellow or brown browser?
Submitted by anabelle.foo on Sat, 01/03/2009 - 14:03Upon reading about Black Bird Browser, I was interested to read about the racialization of a web browser. The website is clean and crisp with earthy colors that some might classify as showing African pride.
My introduction to the concept of Racialization
Submitted by anabelle.foo on Sat, 01/03/2009 - 02:43A few months ago, I was not sure that there were many people that shared my belief in the idea that race is a temporary and subjective construct.
After meeting with Vanessa, I realized that I was not alone. She completed a Masters degree at Concordia University on "A Post-colonial Analysis of the Discursive Making of BiDil and African American Heart Disease."
Erin Gruwell and the Freedom Writers' story of Tolerance
Submitted by anabelle.foo on Thu, 12/25/2008 - 15:12A few weeks ago, after visiting with some of my favourite friends, I noticed a book that seemed to captivate my eyes. It was lying on a low shelf, maybe even a shoe rack, with Hilary Swank on the cover. It looked like a hip-hop type movie. I wondered, why am I interested in this book, I do not usually like books that Hollywood decides to cover, as it likely will be a light fluff movie.
Is Tyra Racist?
Submitted by anabelle.foo on Mon, 12/08/2008 - 01:16As my boyfriend knows, I love America's Next Top Model, and of course the fabulous Tyra. There is something about a strong female figure, that delights me greatly.
A local daily had an article about why smart women like to watch brainless tv, as a way to escape, showing a picture of Cycle 11 contestant Sheena Sakai / Satana with a caption asking if you were disappointed that Sheena did not win.

Growing up in Malaysia, since kindergarten, and all the way through life, we are asked, what race are you?
There are three major races in Malaysia; Malays, Chinese and Indians (as in East Indians for those N. Americans). Also, there are subcategories, orang-asli or native people belong to the Malay category but do not always have equal rights of other Malays.
